How to Propose to a Millennial (and probably anyone else)

The Perfect Proposal: A Millennial's Guide

Join us as we dive into the art of popping the question, tailored for the modern millennial, featuring insights from our very own millennial, Kelly Sternau, CEO and Creative Director of Croft & Stern Jewelry Designs.

What Makes a Proposal Perfect?

In today's world, proposals are more than just tradition; they're a unique celebration of love and commitment for every couple. According to Kelly, the ideal proposal combines thoughtfulness, personalization, and a dash of creativity.

Setting the Stage

When setting the stage for your unforgettable moment, think about the setting that means the most to both of you. Whether it's a cozy dinner, a breathtaking hike, or a surprise getaway, make it personal. Kelly advises, "Think about what makes your relationship special. It could be where you first met or somewhere that holds a strong memory."

*Keep in mind that for many, keeping the moment private is key. Plan a space just for the two of you to keep it intimate.*

The Engagement Ring: Symbol of Forever

At Croft & Stern Jewelry Designs, the engagement ring isn't just jewelry; it's a symbol of everlasting love. When selecting the ring, Kelly recommends considering your partner's style and personality. "Millennials often lean towards modern versions of classic designs combined with ethical sourcing," she notes. "Customized rings add sentimental value and reflect personal tastes."

Involve them Choosing a custom ring is a significant and personal decision, and involving your partner in the selection process ensures that the final piece truly reflects their tastes and preferences. While surprising your partner with a ring can be romantic, collaborating on the design can be even more meaningful. It allows both of you to discuss style preferences, metal choices, and gemstone options, ensuring that the ring is a perfect symbol of your unique relationship. Additionally, involving your partner can prevent any potential disappointments or the need for future alterations. This collaborative effort not only results in a ring that they will cherish forever but also strengthens your bond through shared decision-making and creativity.

Don’t want to design together? At least start shopping together. Many of our guests have a shortlist of 2-3 rings, with the final selection being the surprise.

Do: Elevate your proposal with personal touches. Remember, the best proposals aren’t always the flashiest, but the most thoughtful.

What Not to Do, From Experience:

Don’t propose over water, on a dock, in water, in rapids, in a waterfall, in a lake, on a boat (unless it’s in the cabin). Trust us… you’ll both be nervous and trembling. Large bodies of water + proposals = insurance claim

Traveling with the ring? We cannot stress enough to bring the ring in a carryon - never in a checked bag.

Insure the ring before the moment. Even Kelly’s husband nearly lost her engagement ring before proposing (in Italy, no less)!

Give them time to get ready. Make sure they look ready for photos. Some people put great emphasis on wanting their nails done before the big moment.

Expect some monkey wrenches. Go with the flow and just do your best. Surprising someone is hard work - cut yourself some slack.

  • Yes, you should get down in one knee, if able

It’s easy to get caught up in the moment. Keep safety and timing in mind for flammables, like candles or a bonfire.

Capturing the Moment

Don’t discount the importance of social media content. Capturing your proposal can be a great way to share your joy with loved ones. Kelly suggests, "Think about how you want to capture the moment. It could be a photographer snapping the surprise or a friend with a phone capturing a video to relive the emotions later."

Lastly, don’t wait too long. Together all day? Plan something earlier in the day. On a trip? Best to propose towards the early or middle part. Do yourself a favor and ease anxiety and any potential awkwardness due to stress by not prolonging the moment. They will need time to emote and absorb.

The Aftermath: Celebrate!

Once you've heard that magical "yes," celebrate your love in a way that feels true to your relationship. Whether it's a cozy gathering or a grand bash, Kelly encourages couples to cherish this milestone together.

Have a meal, champagne toast, flowers, or treat ready immediately after your moment to celebrate the “yes!”

The newly engaged will often want to share ASAP with friends and family - get ready to share the moment with phone calls and texts.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the perfect proposal is all about celebrating your unique love story. As Kelly from Croft & Stern Jewelry Designs reminds us, "There's no one-size-fits-all approach. What matters most is that the proposal reflects your relationship and the commitment you share."
